FinOps is a cultural practice

FinOps is a cultural practice. It’s the way for teams to manage their cloud costs, where everyone takes ownership of their cloud usage supported by a central best-practices group. Cross-functional teams in IT, Finance, Product, etc. work together to enable faster product delivery, while at the same time gaining more financial control and predictability.”, according to the FinOps Foundation Framework.

The DexMach tooling and approach facilitates the different phases of FinOps:

Provide best practices and architecture advisory to the different stakeholders with cost optimization. The FinOps principles are the guide for activities in the advisory journey. The goal of this work package is to enable base elements of the FinOps framework to create direct value. An overview:

  • Teams need to collaborate
  • Everyone takes ownership for their cloud usage
  • A centralized team drives cloud cost management
  • Reports should be accessible and timely
  • Decisions are driven by business value of cloud
  • Take advantage of the variable cost model of the cloud.

The FinOps Cloud Cost optimization program is taking all aspects of resource cost in to account. Right-sizing, resource reservation opportunity or process automations are evaluated during the program. DexMach has created a capability to assist in capturing, evaluating and optimizing cloud cost of customer cloud environments. The Cloud Cost Insights solution is a visualization of your cloud consumption with dashboards to assist evaluating cost optimizations. With Cloud Cost Insights you are able to:

  • Have a birds-eye financial view of your complete Azure cloud environment.
  • Keep important historical data and perform trend analysis. Understand cloud usage & cost.
  • Track performance and optimize cloud rates and usage.
  • Right size resources and reduce cloud spend.
  • Custom filter on different levels, like cost center, business unit, application, vendor, …
  • Provide simple dashboard access to different teams in your organization.
  • Leverage Well-Architected Cost Optimization best practices.

The program includes a set of workshops to capture the inventory and assist in defining actionable items as outcome of the different workshops. The technical cost optimization part is mainly facilitated by tooling. The business track includes the steps to evaluate cloud consumption allocation, processes and rebilling (if applicable). Based on customer requirements, time to assist in executing the defined optimizations can be foreseen.

Cost management was new with the introduction of cloud computing, the consumption based costing. Cloud becomes commodity and cost optimizations become more and more important to evaluate and re-evaluate the cloud environment. The program can be offered in a “one-shot” model offering or in cloud cost managed model where cost monitoring is configured and monthly reviews are organized to keep track of the cloud spendings.
